Registering .ca Domain Names

What is a .ca domain name?

The .com, .net, .gov, .org, etc. that appears at the end of a domain name is referred to as an extension or a top level domain (TLD); .ca is the Internet country code for top-level domain names (ccTLD) in Canada. The domain name registry that operates it is the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).

Who can register for a .ca domain name?

Registrants of .ca domains must meet the Canadian Presence Requirements as defined by the registry. Examples of valid entities include:

1. a Canadian citizen who is not a minor
2. a permanent resident of Canada
3. a legally recognized Canadian organization
4. an Inuit, First Nation, Métis or other people indigenous to Canada
5. an Indian Band as defined in the Indian Act of Canada
6. a foreign resident of Canada that holds a registered Canadian trademark
7. an executor, administrator or other legal representative of a person or organization that meets the requirements
8. a division of the government
9. Queen Elizabeth II in her capacity as head of state of Canada
